The University of Pretoria (UP) is the custodian of a significant and internationally recognised collection of historic buildings, artworks, monuments & memorials, landscape elements, botanical gardens, and arboretums that are spread over multiple campuses. These assets are protected by the NHRA 25 of 1999 (National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999), and the act stipulates that such assets may not even be painted without a heritage permit being in place.
HPA was appointed in 2017 by UP to set up a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for all heritage assets, comprising structures, areas, and elements. The aim of the UP Heritage Project is twofold: to ensure compliance with the NHRA 25 of 1999, and to provide a framework for the future use, additions & alterations, restoration, and repair & maintenance of all historic structures, areas, and elements. As the custodian of well over 400 heritage buildings, UP is committed to meeting all of the NHRA 25 of 1999 requirements as part of an ongoing process to reinvent the historic buildings on all UP campuses in a sustainable and sensitive manner to ensure the buildings’ continued use by UP students and staff.
