This part of the University of Pretoria (UP) Heritage Project deals with all heritage assets (structures, areas, & elements, SAE) that are protected by the NHRA 25 of 1999 and excludes historic buildings.
A Conservation Management Plan (CMP) explains why heritage matters to people and sets a framework for future use, additions & alterations, restoration, repair & maintenance, and new developments. A practical example of this is the formulation and upkeep of a plaque policy for each university campus.
A hybrid process was developed to collect & compile information: IT (Epicollect5) and human capital (on-foot photo & condition assessment surveys) were combined to produce the final product.
A total of 258 SAE were captured using Epicollect5 on the Hatfield Campus alone.
SAE on the Hatfield Campus include:
- Significant structures: the Old Agriculture Boulevard entrance gate and the Old Chemistry Building Ruin
- Significant areas: the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Garden and the Fever Tree Avenue
- Significant elements: the art collection of sculptor Eduardo Villa and Dassault Mirage III
Epicollect5 is an open-source data-gathering platform with mobile & web applications and allows for the generation of forms (questionnaires) and freely hosted project websites for the purpose of data collection.
Data is gathered (including GPS information and media) by using multiple devices and all data can be viewed on a central server (via maps, tables, or charts). Epicollect5 is financially supported by the Wellcome Trust Foundation
