As part of an initiative by the Pretoria chapter of Soroptimist International, a group of Batwa women from Kibeho, Rwanda were upskilled to do embroidery and then sew the embroideries into bags, aprons, and other utilitarian objects. Two ladies from the Mapula Embroidery Project (Winterveld, South Africa) travelled to Kibeho where they transferred their embroidery and sewing skills. The articles are marketed globally, and the steady income stream changed the lives of the historically marginalized Batwa community. https://www.kibehoembroderies.com/.
The Kibeho Craft Centre was designed by HPA as part of a fundraising initiative to construct a studio and hub for the Kibeho Embroidery Project.
